Innovation
Innovation is at the core of our communications work, whether we are harnessing emerging technologies to streamline processes, or creating new ways to tell stories and engage audiences. Our standout projects include “Learn to Generate with AI”, a hands-on resource designed to help people unlock the potential of generative AI in their daily work. It’s companion piece, the “AI for Everyday Use” video series, introduces practical, accessible applications of AI to improve efficiency and creativity in daily tasks.
Artificial Intelligence
To enhance staff proficiency with the internal Generative AI tool, the CDC chatbot, we developed Learn to Generate with AI. Its purpose? To educate staff about the chatbot’s functionalities and to build trust in its capabilities.
This internal web page gives a 10,000-foot view of the chatbot’s capabilities, outlines use cases, has a simple guide on prompt engineering, and pointers on privacy and security requirements.
The accompanying AI for Everyday Use explainer videos use a mix of stock footage, motion graphics, voiceover, music, and sound effects to help users can learn the basics of creating a prompt.
The page and videos were so well-received that others at CDC began integrating them into their trainings and presentations. This enthusiastic response has increased staff engagement with the chatbot, fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration.
Messaging Framework & Data Viz Day
In 2024, the CDC introduced a new messaging framework to improve public health communications, focusing on three main themes: expertise, rapid response, and smart investments.
To communicate this framework effectively, our team of communicators, public health experts, and designers sought creative ways to simplify its concepts. We created a gem mining analogy to illustrate our message, which we presented at a CDC communicator’s forum, receiving positive feedback.
This successful experience set the stage for our involvement in the CDC's DataViz Day, where we demonstrated how data storytelling can make complex information easier to understand and more impactful
House of Comms
House of Comms (HOC)—formerly OneChronic—is NCCDPHP’s centralized platform for project management and collaboration. Replacing the outdated OneChronic system, HOC marked a major step to streamlining how the OC works.
Developed through a human-centered approach HOC introduced a searchable image library, digitized content reviews and approvals, streamlined Teams channels, and customizable tracking dashboards.
OC staff led the design, setup, user testing, feature refinement, and communication at each step.
